Dental work

I wrote earlier that I went to the dentist on Tuesday, and had no cavities. The reason I had no cavities is that all the places where I can get cavities have already been filled.

Today it was the girls' turn to go to the dentist. Eleanor was "a little nervous," but she said it turned out really well. Amanda was all eyes, and basically said nothing the whole time but watched everything. They both did very well.

The dentist asked if Eleanor was the higher strung of the two, which I thought was very observant. He noticed that Amanda was generally more laid back and went with the flow better... They both did very well and enjoyed the toys at the end.

Unfortunately, they both seem to have inherited my teeth (which I got from my dad) instead of Michael's. This means that they are very crowded and coming in crooked (orthodontist, here we come!). In addition, Eleanor shows a tendency to get cavities between her teeth and grind her teeth. Amanda has deep grooves in her molars and already has a cavity in one...

So we go back in a few weeks and get their cavities filled. Luke gets to wait around in the waiting room some more, they both get laughing gas (he especially suggested this for Eleanor... Eleanor on nitrous oxide is something I want to see =) and we will see if we can keep their teeth cavity free from now on. Oh, well, as my friend says, "You got kids, you got trouble."

My hero, Helen Parr

Otherwise known as Elastigirl , a.k.a Mrs. Incredible. She is a stay at home mom ( SAHM ), she clearly feels that what she is doing is important and is willing to give up a lot to do it (remember her comment in the intro: "I'm at the top of my game! Leave saving the world to the guys? I don't think so.") But she is finding fulfillment in leading her family from day to day, in doing a hard job well. She also knows that she is very talented, and that knowledge helps her see beyond the repetitive drudgery of staying home. My favorite scene is from the deleted introduction, where she talks with a "career woman" who is of the opinion that staying home is fine for people who can't do anything else. She responds that taking care of her kid is at least as hard as saving the world, and is valuable contribution to society. The point for me is that someone has to do the job that I'm doing, and it's not something that you could pay someone to do. I see...

These feet were made for walking...

Baby Luke took a few steps yesterday! Yay! He was standing up by me, and Miss Tanita held out her hand and told him to come, and he did! When he looked like getting down on his hands and knees, she just said no, and he looked back at her and kept walking! Sorry for the exclamation points, I'm excited, for Luke and for all of us! For a while it looked like Luke would walk instead of crawl, he spent so much time practicing and demanding that I hold his hands while he walked around (this can be very painful for the parent's back or for her knees). But then he learned to crawl, and that seemed to dampen his enthusiasm for walking. Recently he's been standing more and more, holding on to flimsier and flimsier things. He stands between two things just further than arms reach apart, and you see him thinking, "It sure is a lot of trouble to get down and up again, maybe I should walk... Nah, not today." He hasn't taken any steps since then. Eleanor took a break...

Girl toys

A friend just had a post about her son's desire to have a pink bejewled play phone (she and the people who comment have great things to say: here it is so you can read it). Thinking about her post made me very glad that for girls 5 and under (which is all I have experienced lately) there is no toy that is off limits as far as I can tell. Amanda's favorite toys are trains (although she doesn't play with them the way some of her boy friends do. I think Chanson's kids would play well with her version of trains). Her favorite movie is Cars. Her favorite TV show is Bob the Builder. No one in her life (relatives, friends, teachers) tells her that she can't enjoy all of these things. On the other hand, she likes to play with all these things while she is dressed as a princess... In Eleanor's class, everyone's favorite thing to do is woodworking, both girls and boys. The only mathematicians she knows are women, so she expects to do well in math as well...
