Why is it...

...that when a baby is sad, his cry sounds like "Maaaaa maaaaa maaaa!" and when he is happy, it sounds like "Da da da da da"?

Michael suggests that this is a survival mechanism. I think it is something the dads worked out ages ago when they were figuring out what to call themselves. Luke, however, doesn't care.

Too funny!!! You know, my American Heritage Dictionary agrees with your theory!!!

I looked up "dad" and it says "A father. [Prob.of baby-talk orig.]"

That made me smile, very funny! I was wondering, though, do French babies say "Da Da?"

Hmmm, I don't really remember if that was one of their favorite babbling syllables or not. Of course my sample would be tainted by hearing English in the home all the time... ;)
