A Big Big Help

Today I did a little teeny bit of spring cleaning---I tried to tidy up the porch, one of my most favorite places to be in the spring. I tried to tidy it up while Luke and Amanda were around, which reminds me why I don't usually try to do that.

First I swept the leaves off the porch. Luke helped first by grabbing the broom and swinging it wildly around. I don't know what babies have with brooms several times taller than they are, but my kids loved swinging brooms around. I finally gave him a hand broom and rescued my broom from him. He then proceeded to sit in the middle of the pile of leaves and pick them up with the hand broom and throw them around. Amanda helped by hiding behind the pieces of porch furniture and by picking up the leaves that were stuck between the floor boards of the porch.

Then I needed to wash off the chalk from the walls. I had started letting the kids write on the wall with chalk one day when it had been raining for about a week and we really needed to get out of the house, but there was no where to go... Chalk is washable, I figured, and it will keep us from going crazy---and so 3 years later, here we are.

Amanda helped by taking the sponge and washing for about 3 minutes, and then going out to wash her tricycle. Luke helped by trying to suck on the sponge. When I gave him the whisk broom instead, he put that in the water and swept it around the porch. Then he helped by trying to get into the water basin, over and over again. We ended when he fell over while getting into the water basin, tipping it over and giving himself a black eye. Whew, that was exhausting! I was reminded again why I don't do spring cleaning more often.

On the other hand, since Michael is out tonight, I had to put all 3 kids to sleep. The problem is that Luke and Amanda go to bed at the same time---but tonight, Eleanor read to Amanda, helped her brush her teeth, and got her tucked into bed while I nursed Luke to sleep. Eleanor is a bit excited----sitting still is not one of her strengths, and so Amanda tends to be a little riled up after being put to sleep by Eleanor. But overall, I was happy to have a big girl to be a big help. I rewarded her by letting her watch a movie (Peter Pan!) before bed.

Sounds so familiar!! Isn't it nice when, occasionally, the children's efforts DO help =]

Hi Lenise!

They really are nice kids. Luke was helping me today by taking clothes out of the washer (we have a front loader). Unfortunately, he dumped them on the floor. Then he took the dirty clothes I was getting ready to wash out of the washer too. He looked so businesslike while he was helping, and so happy to be with me that it was impossible to be upset.

Yeah, laundry is something our guys CAN do a pretty good job of helping with. Usually they do, but we still have some misunderstandings from time to time!

Things that are true

"Axial tilt is the reason for the season." (Picture a globe with the northern hemisphere tilted away from the sun...) I believe this is meant to be an anti-theist slogan, although I would point out that I believe there is a reason for the axial tilt. This is a runner up to my favorite true science picture, the "Gravity Forecast." I linked to this when I was a graduate student, but the site is long since down. Picture a weather forecast graphic, but instead of clouds and temperatures, the 5-day forecast predicts 9.8 m/s^2 down. Even the idea still makes me laugh, perhaps I will reproduce it someday. Luke cut his 4th tooth today (Finally!). So far they haven't caused us too much trouble. We'll see what happens when he gets his canines.

Science at home

We had a fun "experiment" yesterday. We took a 2 liter bottle of diet Coke and some Mentos, put 4 Mentos at the same time into the bottle, and shot a huge jet of soda into the air about 8 feet high! It was quite exciting, although I think the warnings that you might want to use eye protection were a bit overblown. I suppose that it was an experiment only in the loosest sense of the term, but Michael forsees lots of fun in the future: using other types of soda, other methods for adding the mentos to the soda, and so on. It did get us out of the house for a while, and had Eleanor and Amanda dropping mentos into the used soda bottle and watching to see what happened---so cute!

A day at the fair

Yesterday afternoon the whole family went to the NC state fair. We had a good enough time that I think we are going back next year, although perhaps we will leave Luke at home with a sitter. We went right after Eleanor's school. Michael picked up Eleanor, I drove Luke and Amanda. Through an amazing bit of timing, we met in the parking lot and walked to the fair together, about a 10 minute walk (not bad at all, really). I had meant to get to the fair much earlier and see the parts that Eleanor and Michael claimed not to be interested in (the animals and crafts, mostly) but I was running a little late. Our area has been in a serious drought for the past few months, so I am not complaining that it rained (hard) on us as we were getting to the gate. But it does seem a bit hard that we planned to go to the fair on the one day in the past 3 months that we had a rainstorm. Fortunately, the rain was scattered, and the clouds soon moved off to water another area. We took the opportun...
