Summer exercise program

I admit that I am not an active person.  I would rather sit and read a book than ride a bike, or even take a walk.  My kids (especially Ella) are taking after me in this.  Ella isn't in any organized sports that require lots of practice and hour long games---Taekwondo is good, but it's only 1 hour twice a week. I was also concerned about Amanda's core strength: as I've learned through my exercise class, "They're all core exercises!"  It's important to have good core strength for all aspects of life. So I was trying to think of how we could stay active during the hot summer months when it is easier to stay inside rather than go out into the 100 degree heat.

We go swimming and bike riding.  We can play at the park (although Ella and I bring books =).   But we started a daily exercise program to augment these.  Here's what we do:
  • sit ups.  I do 20.  Ella does 30, Luke does 10 and Amanda does 15. 
  • pushups.  Ella and I do 30, Amanda and Luke have to do 10 but they have to be really good.  If they're not good, I make them do them again.
  • Jump ropes.  I do 100, Ella does 120, Amanda 100.  Luke just learned a few days ago so he does 10, and he's working up to 50.
We're trying to improve all of these numbers over the summer---the theory says that if you do something every day with effort, you will improve.  We'll see if we can demonstrate that over the next few months.

Well, exercise never schedule for summer or winter. It can be done at any time. Exercise is very helpful in all ways.

Books I like: reality edition

Here are some more books from my childhood and later. I read a lot as a kid, and these books are the ones that stand out in my memory. I figure that if I can remember them 25 years after I read them, they must be pretty good. I'm calling this the "Reality Segment," not fantasy, not science fiction, not history, just real life. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin : This is probably my favorite children's book of all time. I read it in 3rd grade or so, then read it again to clear it up more. Then I read it in 6 th grade and finally understood what was going on during the second reading of the will. In more recent readings I've understood more about Sydelle Paulaski and the relationship between Dr. Denton and the lovely Angela. What a pleasure. Books I like: magic/science fiction

I read a lot of science fiction and fantasy when I was younger, so I was surprised when I was thinking about this list at how few books were on it. The other thing that is interesting is how many books I just remember a few details from, but not anything useful like a title or author. Half Magic and the whole series, by Edward Eager: My favorite is Knight's Castle, although I suspect I would have enjoyed it more if I had ever read Ivanhoe... Mrs. Piggle Wiggle by Betty MacDonald: I'm not sure when it happened, but I now identify with the parents rather than the kids. The Seven Citadels by Geraldine Harris: I came back to the Jr. High library to check this out even after I moved on to the high school.
